How To Use Sleep Aids To Ensure A Restful Night
If you participate in any stressfilled activity, or anything which creates over-stimulation, try an alternative. Even that most common of modern relaxations, television viewing, is rarely relaxing at all. Most of the fare watched on modern televisions tends to be either 'action' programs, or films containing violence and fast action scenes. Habitually watching these kind of programs is not going to put your mind into the right relaxed state to induce sleep.
Even if the TV you are viewing is of a gentler nature, the effect of staring at an artificial screen with fluctuating pictures has a stimulating rather than relaxing effect on the brain. To be honest, refraining from watching TV in the last two or three hours before bedtime would be sensible.
Drinking stimulant drinks containing caffeine before retiring is simply asking for trouble. Even someone who typically drinks a large quantity of caffeine, whose body has largely adjusted to it, will find that cutting the stimulant out, or at least well down, will help their sleep patterns return to normal.
If you feel like some nutrient before bedtime, carbohydrate foods such as porridge, pasta, rice and bread are your best bet, and may swear by bedtime drinks made with milk. Certainly, all of these are worth trying before you reach for artificial sleeping aids.
It is a good idea to make sure that the environment is as comfortable as it can be. Make sure you keep the temperature in the room at the level which you find most suitable for sleeping. Make sure that the room is dark. If there is a lot of light outside, consider investing in a blackout board to block this out. If your clock is a modern electric clock giving out too much light, swap it for an old style manual clock.
The alternative to these suggestions is to wear a night eye mask. If you try this, give yourself time to adjust to it, as it will feel strange at first. Any of these environment improvements should be tried before you resort to artificial drugs, whose effectiveness is severely disputed anyway.
