When To Use OTC Sleep Aids To Get A Restful Night's Sleep
OTC sleep aids should really only be considered as a last resort in trying to get a good night's sleep. They do nothing to help the root cause of the problem, which is what you need to be addressing. It is not, however, accurate to say that there is no place for these over the counter sleep aids. There are times when tiredness will have grown over days or even weeks, leaving a person feeling weak and ill, and yet still unable to get to sleep.
In this situation, it is very hard to advise someone not to use an OTC sleep aid on a very short term basis, just to try and bring some sense of normality back into their life. Although the drug induced sleep will not make up for the natural sleep which has been lost, it could have the effect of training the body to remember its sleep patterns, making sleep easier on subsequent nights.
The problem with these medicines is that they can induce dependency. Anyone who uses a short term crutch to solve an immediate problem is then faced with the potential problem of returning to normal without the drug. These dangers are not to be underestimated. Use of an over the counter sleep aid will always carry risk, especially if the user has an addictive personality. It is all too easy to remember the night when you finally achieved a good night's sleep, and to reach for the very thing which brought this about.
Increased tolerance is another danger which must never be overlooked. As you continue to use an over the counter sleep aid, your body will adjust to the continual intake of the drug. You will find that you need ever greater doses of the drug to achieve the same effect. This can then have a knock on effect which will be far more serious. If the vicious circle is not broken, the increased tolerance could lead to a permanent breakdown of organs or systems within the body.
The problems do not stop there. All drugs have side effects of some kind, and the side effect of sleep OTC medicines can be severe. If someone has lost sleep continually over time, and then tries to put that right with the use of a sleep aid, they will almost certainly feel extreme drowsiness the next day. The brain's function can also be impaired, leading to forgetfulness and a sense of disorientation. Your mouth will almost certainly be extremely dry, and no amount of drinking will seem to help.
There is also a potential danger to anyone who is using other medicines, because drugs do react with each other. Combining medicines is always hazardous unless adequate research has been carried out to prove that any given combination is safe.
Sleep aids do have their place in helping people through short term situations, such as when someone is recovering from some kind of trauma, or medical situation. The problem here is that most medical procedures will involve drug treatments, often continuing after the procedure has ended, and this makes any drug combining dangerous. Provided there are no other drugs being taken, you could consider short term use of OTC sleep aids.
