How To Decide Whether Zopiclone Is The Right Sleep Treatment For You
Zopiclone is one of a wide range of drugs available to treat insomnia. As with all sleeping drugs it is only recommended for short term use. Although there are those who claim that zopiclone is safe for longer term use than most other prescription sleep drugs, recent evidence does not suggest that this is the case.
As with all other sleep drugs, zopiclone should be seen as both a very short term solution, and a solution of last resort. Before you even think about trying to get a prescription for it, you should do some serious thinking into exactly what is causing the sleep problems, and how they can be countered with less drastic methods.
If you are a coffee drinker, excess caffeine consumption can be a major cause of insomnia, and this needs to be addressed. Relying on the drug to fight the caffeine and win when you want to go to sleep is not only foolish, it could even be dangerous. There is evidence to suggest that zopiclone reacts with caffeine in a less than desirable way. Even if you are prepared to take the risks of drug treatment, you would still need to get away from coffee to gain any benefit.
It is well worthwhile trying to break your coffee dependency before you even think about using drugs. Stimulants can have the effect of making you ever more reliant upon them, and that can lead to you increasing your consumption without even realizing it. At this point, many of the body's functions, including sleep, are severely affected.
A natural remedy will probably be a better bet than resorting to a drug like zopiclone. In some cases, sleep loss is due to a hormonal problem. A common deficiency is that of melatonin, which is rightly regarded as the most important sleep hormone. Try supplementing that before you think about drug treatments.
Assuming you have decided beyond a doubt that zopiclone is what you need to fight your own sleep loss, you then need to prepare for the fact that you will have to adjust your lifestyle considerably to cope with the inevitable side effects.
Zopiclone suffers from the same side effects which seem to afflict all sleeping drugs. The dry mouth will not be that difficult for most people to put up with. Just drink more fluids. It is the drowsiness and dizziness felt during the day which is the main problem, and, depending on your lifestyle, it could be a severe one.
Tests have been performed on zopiclone users who drive motor vehicles, and there was a substantial reduction in performance. It is strongly recommended that anyone on this drug does not drive at all, which tells you that the side effects are very common and very real. The only positive side to this is that as zopiclone is only recommended for very short term use, there is going to be less disruption in a patient's life.
Although there are much safer ways of dealing with sleep loss, and ways which can be applied for much longer, there will always be those with their faith planted firmly in drugs and surgery. For these people, the answer to their problem may well be zopiclone.
